4 Things You Need to Know About Stratos

Stratos Board Game

4 Things you need to know about the board game Stratos

  1. The designers are not just Canadian, they’re local.

Board and Tale Games is incorporated in Hamilton, Ontario. Lead Designer Jacob Chodoriwsky lives here as well.

Co-Designer David Gundrum hails from Guelph, Ontario, as does Lead Illustrator Garth Laidlaw, who has also created a very cool webcomic called Paperless called Paperless.

  1. They host local events around Hamilton.

Jacob and his team organize game nights around the city at local businesses like 1UP Games, Mulberry Street Coffeehouse, and Collective Arts Brewery.

“Casual tournaments” are designed to be fun for new players, experts, and everyone in-between.

For the first round, players are seeded by experience so that new players get a chance to learn the game – in under 5 minutes. Then the winners of each match face off in the final, all the wiser after just one play.

  1. Stratos has a play style for every kind of player.

While Stratos is a fantasy themed game and has inevitable (and epic!) battles, it also takes some inspiration from more peaceful resource-gathering games like Settlers of Catan.

You play to 10 Victory Points that can be earned in different ways, from hoarding resources to finding treasures and more.

  1. The first expansion was just released.

When designing an expansion, Jacob insisted on thinking different. Why make an expansion that requires the base game at all?

Stratos: Light in the Darkness is a themed expansion and 2-player standalone set. It adds monsters that emerge from underground and attack all players, requiring teamwork with your enemies to survive.

As part of their series of expansion release parties, you can come play Stratos with Jacob and the team on Wednesday March 1st at Collective Arts Brewery.

Admission and snacks are free. If you enjoy games and beer, go experience something different – playing a game with its’ lead designer, right here in Hamilton. How about that?
