5 Reasons You Need to Attend Hamilton’s Supercrawl

Supercrawl Festival Event

Hamilton’s Supercrawl is a Must-Attend Event, Here’s Why!

Anything with the word “super” as a prefix has to be good, right? YES, absolutely right! Hamilton’s Supercrawl is, without a doubt, one of our favourite times of the year.

Officially entering its 9th season, Supercrawl, Hamilton’s notorious Art and Culture festival produced by Sonic Unyon, takes place along James Street North, every second weekend of September. This year, the festival returns on September 8th, 9th and the 10th, and is looking for its best turn out yet. So let’s make that happen!

So just how big is Supercrawl? Well let’s put it this way, in 2014, the 3-day Arts and Culture festival attracted well-over 150, 000 people from all over Ontario. This year, they’ll be looking to attract well over 200,000 over the course of the weekend, and with the entertainment they have planned for us, it’s a number we’ll likely see! But hey, who’s counting anyways, right? Oh yeah, it’s also ranked as one of the Top 100 Festivals/Events in Ontario, and rightfully so.

So, in other words, it’s pretty big and pretty damn amazing!

If you’re looking for an excuse (not that you really need one) to head down to Hamilton and checkout what the rumors are all about, then the Supercrawl weekend is calling your name. And if you’re from the Greater Hamilton Area, but haven’t made it out to any of the previous Supercrawls before… What the heck are you waiting for?!

Alright time to get to the good stuff, shall we?

Here are 5 reasons (and trust us, there’s plenty more) you’ll want to checkout this year’s Supercrawl 2017.

1 | The ART

It should come to no surprise that you can expect to see a ton of Art during the Supercrawl weekend. Especially considering it is an Arts and Culture festival. And not to mention, it does take after Hamilton’s monthly Art Crawls that allows local Artists to showcase their work.

At Supercrawl, the Art comes in many shapes, sizes, colours, and pretty much comes from all over the place. It’s a great mix of both local and non-local Artists, all of which are extremely talented.

The Art Installations that Supercrawl Artists showcase, are always a hit and always attract positive attention. Keep a lookout for these and you’ll enjoy the crawl that much more. Here are a few of the installations from last year’s festival.

In addition to Art Installations, there are always a number of Art shows happening atthe local galleries, including Centre [3], the collaborative print-making studio and gallery.

2 | Live Music

What do 50+ musicians and groups, multiple stages and 3 days of entertainment have in common? Supercrawl 2017, of course!

On top of all the visual Art, Music has been and continues to be at the heart of Supercrawl. After all, the Event is hosted and organized by Sonic Unyon Recording Company, an independent record label located on Wilson Street in Hamilton, just off of James Street.

Some of the music acts include: Family of Things, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, The Kents, The Medicine Hat, Kroy, Blackie and The Rodeo KingsSam Roberts Band, John K. Samson, Daniel Lanois.

3 | Local Venues (Food, Drinks and Shops)

There’s nothing better than having the perfect excuse to hop around and checkout all (well, most) of the local Venues. If you’re from Hamilton, then try switching it up and checking out that shop or restaurant or bar that you haven’t been to yet. On the flip side, if you’re not from the area, then by all means go nuts! This is the best weekend to see what Hamilton is all about. You won’t be disappointed!

James St (both North and South) as well as King William offer amazing restaurants and bars that whip up great meals and the amazing drinks! I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. Whatever cravings you have, we guarantee that they’ll be satisfied. If you’re not in the mood for food and just looking to grab a a few pints or cocktails, rest assured that you’re in the right destination.

As much as we could talk about food and drinks all day, there are a ton of other shops and Venues that are more than worthwhile checking out on your Supercrawl adventures!

A few suggestions to checkout: The Mule, The French, Bar Sazerac, NiqueHotti Biscotti, Architect Hair Design, Hambrgr, MezCal, Serve Ping Pong, Chocolate on James, Born and Raised, Bar Izakaya, Mixed Media & O’s Clothes.

4 | Vendors (Crack those piggy banks!)

What would a street festival be without having a good mix of quality vendors? Well, probably not a very good one to be honest. It’s time to crack open that piggy bank of yours and get ready to spend a few bucks this weekend! Even you’re piggy bank wouldn’t want you to.

Every Supercrawl there’s always a great mix of vendors from local Artists, crafts, clothing, local organizations and charities, local media and publication companies, and.. dun..dun..dun.. (my version of sound effects) Food trucks! Let’s be honest, there’s just something about food trucks that keep people coming back for more.

So say goodbye to your piggyback (sorry, buddy) and hello to your new, soon-to-be purchase!

5 | The Atmosphere

Like any great event, it’s not just about the bells and whistle, but the overall atmosphere of everything that makes it great. And trust us, Supercrawl has no shortage of a great atmosphere! Whether you’re walking up and down the street checking out the vendors, grabbing a drink or a bite to eat at a local Venue, or even listening to the bands playing their set at one of the many stages, the atmosphere is AMAZING.

There’s only so much we can really say to convince you to come to this year’s Supercrawl. It’s one of those Events where FOMO (fear of missing out) is a real thing!

Besides, where else are you going to see Artwork of an elephant riding a bicycle with such grace?

Supercrawl. That’s where.
