8 Principles of A Midsummer’s Dream Colour Festival

A Midsummer’s Dream is Ontario’s premier colour festival that takes place each year in Hamilton, ON towards the end of August. This year the festival returns for it’s 5th year and takes place on Saturday, August 20th.

Below are the 8 values reflected in the Midsummer’s Dream experience:

  1. Radical Inclusion

Anybody may be apart of the dreaming tribe. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

2. Giving

A Midsummer’s Dream is devoted to acts of giving, we have created the event to be a massive force for good. Every year, we collect food donations for local food banks, and we ask every participant to bring nonperishable food items as an entrance fee. Flourishing, and enlightened societies help each other, and we have created this event to serve the community. We ask all our participants to do so. Give as much as you can, and lets help others in need.

3. Leave No Trace

The Dreaming Tribe respects the environment and is fully committed to leaving no physical trace whenever they gather. Just remember to clean up after yourselves and whenever possible to leave such places in a better state than when found. Pick up the garbage.

4. Radical Self Expression

Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.

5. Communal Effort

Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote, and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.

6. Participation

Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

7. Immediacy

Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

8. Respect Others Boundaries

That’s right, some people may take some time to come out of their shell, and that is quite alright. Do not unexpectedly throw colour in somebodies face, instead rub it lovingly on them.
