Comedy in the Hammer: Mike Mitchell

comedy in the hammer week 15

Hello!  Welcome back to Comedy in the Hammer! Every week we sit down with a local comedian and let you know what shows are happening in the city this week!

We spoke with Hamilton favourite Mike Mitchell. Mike runs a monthly comedy night at The Casbah.

Mike Mitchell Comedy in the hammer

How long has the show been going for?

One month baby! She’s fresh.

Where is the show/when does it start/is there any cost?

Comedy Night in Hamilton happens on the last Thursday of every month at the Casbah, corner of King and Queen, in lovely downtown Hamilton. You can park at the Freemason lodge if you’re so inclined, but I think you have to join their cult to do so. It’s 10 dollhairs to get in, with two dollars from every ticket sold going to charity. Come to the show so you can feel like a really good person by supporting both the comedy scene AND The Lost Organization, a local mental health initiative.

How often does the show happen?

The last Thursday of every month, Matt. Are you even reading these?

How long have you been doing stand up for?

A little over a year baby! She’s fresh.

What makes the show different than others?

It’s really the only monthly comedy show happening in Hamilton right now, other than Hammer Night Live, which is a great variety show. With the absence of Eric Johnston’s Comedy In The Creek, we’re the only monthly show featuring some of the next big comics. With the help our sponsors The Burnt Tongue, The Crafted Collections, and MMJ we’re also able to pay our comics. With paper money, too. I wish that wasn’t a point of difference, but it is, unfortunately. The Casbah is a really nice club, and we feature touring pro comics as well some of the best local up and comers. The Casbah also has lots of real swell craft beer on tap, and it’s next door to a deadly charcuterie and cocktail bar. If you get a raging erection at the thought of this hipster paradise, this show atmosphere is for you. And even if you don’t, this show is for you. Come to the show. Please. I have a daughter on the way. I need to feed her.

What’s your favourite part of running the show?

My favourite part is being able to bring high-end talent to Hamilton. It’s great to be able to host funny people I really respect, and get to watch them do their thing. Oh, and paying comics. I can’t stress this enough. When you can pay comics, you’re going to have a good show, the audience grows to expect a quality professional show, and everyone is happy at the end of the night.

Do you have any stories of something unexpected that’s happened at a show?

Well, we’re only one show in so far, so…not yet. Everything ran smoothly, we had a good crowd, and the comics had a good time. How boring. There’s nothing less juicy than things running according to plan, but hey, who knows what the next shows will bring. Fingers crossed for a fist fight with a heckler! (Don’t come and heckle though, for real. Don’t be a dick.)

Are there any lineups coming up you’re excited about?

Lineups are like children. You obviously have a favourite one, but you’re not supposed to say which one you like best. I’m excited about April with Pat Coppolino, Manolis Zontanos, Pat MacDonald, Jason Allen, and Kev Sheeler. I find them all hilarious and they’ve all helped me grow tremendously as a comic throughout the past year. May is shaping up to be a really good lineup as well. Can’t wait!
