Comedy in the Hammer: Josh Kemp

comedy in the hammer week4 - Josh Kemp

Hey guys, welcome back to Comedy in the Hammer! We’re back after the holidays to bring you a new interview and show you what shows are happening in the city this week!

This week I’m joined by comedian Josh Kemp. He’s been killing it all across Ontario.

Comedy in the Hammer Josh Kemp

MS: How long have you been doing stand up for?

JK: About 2 years

MS: What’s your favorite room to perform at in the city?

JK: Hamilton Yuk Yuk’s

MS: How do you usually deal with hecklers/got any good stories??

JK: I once had a racist heckler who had yelled something at one of my jokes to which I responded ‘Me and him have something in common, we both can’t see each other right now. I can’t see because I have a light in my face and he can’t see because he’s got a sheet over his head.’

MS: What advice would you give newer comics?

JK: I could give the usual write and don’t stop doing it get onstage, etc… But there’s much more to it than that. It’s not just about going onstage and writing, well it is but you need to manage your time wisely. Don’t spend all your time writing and don’t spend all your time performing. You need a balance of the two because if you perform too much you’ll have a show with no quality content. If you write too much you’ll have good jokes but no stage presence so yeah, you need to sort of find what works for you.

MS: What’s the one joke you’ve tried over and over again to make work but for whatever reason cannot get right?

JK: Anything personal really, I find that if you bring stories to close to your life they lose that ‘funny’ aspect that they could have had if it were to do with something you were detached with such as politics or the news.

MS: Where can we check you out online?

MS: Are there any videos we can see online?

JK: Very old ones but if you search for me on YouTube you’ll find some.
