Top Ten Things to Experience During The Quilt of Belonging Exhibit

Starting July 10th the Heart of Ontario presents the Quilt of Belonging at the Cotton Factory! It runs until August  16th, and while it’s here there will be multiple daily activities taking place. We’ve counted down the top ten that we’re most excited for!

1. Launch Event

July 10th is the public launch of the Peace by Piece: Stitching Together Canadians Stories exhibit featuring the Quilt of Belonging. Enjoy live entertainment and a presentation of how the Quilt of Belonging was created.  Be one of the first to see the Quilt in Hamilton.

2. Concert Series

Every Friday and Saturday nights will feature a different artist performing on the 3rd floor of the Cotton Factory. These musicians will provide a variety of types of music throughout July and August offering something for everyone!  Be sure to see Tom Wilson and Friends at Theatre Aquarius on July 15th

3. Workshops

Quilt of Belonging Workshop

Saturdays and Sundays will host the many different workshops that are offered! For a small fee, become immersed in food, culture, and art as you participate in the various professional led activities. Everything from Chocolate and Tea Pairing to Social Song and Dance, there’s a workshop for everyone’s interest.

4. Dance Series

Get active and learn something new! This 5-part dance series includes a different style of dance every Sunday targeted to participants of all skill levels.

5. Yoga Series

Start your Wednesday morning right by participating in a free Yoga Class where you’ll feel fresh and energized. Try a different class each week and be sure to bring a mat!

6. Interactive Demonstrations

Quilt of Belonging Interactive Demonstrations

Led by experienced professionals, these interactive demonstrations offer many engaging and skill building exercises where participants can learn and take part in the session themselves. Participation is Free!

7. Lecture Series

Be captivated by the history and stories of Canadians and their connection to Canada’s nation-building. This truly authentic Canadian lecture series every Thursday from 7PM-9PM is not to be missed!

8. Guided Tours of The Quilt

Quilt of Belonging Guided Tour

A richly hued portrait of the human family, Quilt of Belonging is a 120-foot-long collaborative textile art project. It’s 263 blocks portray the rich cultural legacies of the First Peoples in Canada and every nation of the world at the dawn of the new Millennium.


9. Gift Shop – Canadian Made

The Quilt will feature an authentically Canadian sourced gift shop with a variety of unique handcrafted items from around the Hamilton, Halton, and Brant region. These original items make great gifts that support local artists as well as celebrate Canada’s 150th

10. Minecraft Quilt

Get creative and make your own Quilt block in the world of Minecraft.  A digital frame of the Quilt of Belonging has been created by Game Asylum, allowing children and adults to design their own quilt blocks and share them through social media!  In the world of Minecraft, this quilt has the potential to grow beyond 263 blocks.
